Summary
What Jayce first ascribed to suppressants (and sheer willpower) was actually the byproduct of a serious medical condition. Viktor hasn't had a heat since he was a teenager. Every year Viktor’s hypothalamus tested the dry well of his fuel reserves and elected to divert any runoff from ovulation to more vital bodily functions (say, breathing).
Worse: It’s common knowledge that heats and ruts are strongest at their outset. Hormones fluctuate over the years; cycles settle; the body calibrates to accommodate the unruly roommate of ovulation. But Viktor’s body doesn’t have the benefit of practice. Somehow—against every natural law—Viktor, about a side glance from death and as far as a decade from his last heat, is about to nosedive into an induction furnace.

Summary

Summary
Some cat-and-mouse, forgive the pun, had begun months ago. Behind the joke of Viktor's quietness when walking short steps without his cane, and a thrown off remark about how Jayce ought to put a bell on him after one too many silent scares.
That afternoon had remained quiet until it didn't- namely in the crescendo of heavily-charged midnight sex, with neither mentioning exactly how or why the act felt like something clicking into place, or rather something coming loose. Or that the heaviness was even a fact.
They'd moved on, until a wholly unserious conversation confirmed the mutual curiosity of both parties on the topic of this. This, being the first happenstance of Viktor's entirely unconvincing embodiment of a cat inside the bedroom. Strange, how daily life has him portraying a more believable caricature, with his heat-seeking nature and guiltless late-night nuzzling. Ah well. Back to the now.
