Summary
In 2022, Ilya wakes up in a hospital in Ottawa with no memory of how he got there. He has hazy recollections of 2015, but he can't remember anything about the past seven years. He is shocked to learn he is now married to Shane Hollander, a fact that forces him to reconcile the decisions of his past self with the expectations he inherited from his father.

Shane Hollander stood before him, palm outstretched, cradling Irina Rozanova’s golden crucifix.
Ilya flinched back, like he had been burned. Hollander’s warmth had moved too close, too fast, morphing into a threat and a violation. Hollander should not have that cross.

The forest noise swells around him in a great gust of birdsong and tree branch rustling, as if the woods are huffing a laugh at him under their breath. Shane still doesn’t believe in fairytales or spirits, but he’s starting to think that maybe there is a personality to this place. He stops in his tracks at the thought.
“I’m fucking losing it,” he whispers to himself. “That has to be what this is.”

He has his hanahaki surgery a month later. There’s no other choice: Shane doesn’t want to die or stop playing hockey, and Rozanov has made it perfectly clear, over and over, that they are nothing to each other.
But his post-surgery instructions don’t tell him how to keep playing in a league where Rozanov is still always there. Or what to do when Rozanov texts him before a game in Boston.
