His touch slips down her neck, her collarbone, to that darkening mark on her breast, textured by disease, as if her skin is necrotizing. Sherry’s pretty sure it isn’t, the cells aren’t dead, just…infected. The look of it is horrific, though. He’s tried to scrub it off, to pick at it, pull the skin away like it’s just a covering, a bandage, a layer that’s marring the skin. It bleeds but it never heals.
Sherry told him to stop doing it, that it could possibly make it worse, make the infection spread faster. She isn’t sure, but there’s the possibility. So he’s tried to stop picking at it. Tried to stop wanting to scrape steel wool over his neck. He’s trying, he’s trying.

Leon has been through so much in his life, but there's something about this virus slowly killing him and people he loves that terrorizes his thoughts, to the point that he doesn't know how to focus on the present instead of a potential impending death. Claire is there for him, but even she's more scared than she lets on.
Takes place before Requiem but after signs of the infection have started showing up.
The title is from the song Scars by Boy Epic.

“I’m okay,” Ghost had murmured, a skeletal gloved hand coming out to cradle his jaw, thumb swiping away the blood, the sinew, the remainder of the carnage that Soap had caused in his desperation to get to Simon.
And despite the fact that Simon nearly died, the man had leaned forward, pulling John beneath his chin, the skull mask digging against his temple. But John didn’t care, the pain reminded him that this was real. That Simon was alive, that he was breathing.
And the man said nothing when John lifted a hand, when he pulled at the edge of the balaclava, slipping beneath the fabric, hand splayed flat against the column of Simon's throat, crying out when he felt his pulse, strong and steady beneath his fingertips.

One moment they’d been fine, tight unit manoeuvring with ease through enemy territory, clearing buildings and neutralising threats. The next? Soap rubbed the back of his hand across his face, smearing sweat and dirt. He was filthy, covered in fluids not all his own. A hazard of the job. At least the helmet kept the worst of the building debris out of his hair.
He supposed it didn't matter really, it was a hopeless, rhetorical question. He knew exactly what had gone down, and hated every fucking minute of it.

The shiver ran through him almost imperceptibly, a brief chill curling insidiously down his spine. He wouldn't have thought it worth noticing, but from the corner of his eye, a frightening skull mask tilted inquisitively in his direction.
“Alright there, Johnny?” Ghost's voice was somewhere between teasing and concern, even as he shouted over the whump whump whump of the heli blades.
“Somethin’ walkin’ over my grave. It's nothin’, Lt,” John answered him, not turning to meet the older man's eyes. Sweat was pricking the back of his neck, but he was determined to work through it. This mission was important.
He swallowed a few times against the tickle in the back of his throat, and forced himself to remain relaxed, his hands curled into the neck of his tac vest. His thigh was warm where he and Ghost were pressed against each other, and the movement of the heli kept rattling them together, elbows and knees knocking gently.
If he let on that he was maybe feeling a little under the weather, and had come along anyway, his husband would murder him right here, mission, country, and queen be damned.
