Donna had a blanket wrapped around her shoulders, like she was sitting huddled in the back of an ambulance; some sort of car-crash or housefire victim, watching the red and blue lights flash like Christmas decorations. She was shuffling behind the couch, doing something just out of sight, which set Laura's nerves on fire. Pricked them just to the finest point. She was all teeth and needles, a live-wire prepping for the spark. The shock. Anything that touched her would come with bruises, burns. Anyone who touched her would learn well enough not to touch her again. She was not the sort of thing to be touched. She didn't think she ever could be. Not now. Not anymore.
Donna tries to distract Laura, comfort her, with mixed results. But Laura loves her. So it's more than enough.
