His eyes met her chef coat. The one he got custom-made for her lying on the table, neatly folded. He walked towards it, before stretching his fingertips to graze across the fabric, his hand deciding to rest on her initials. A pathetic attempt at feeling her presence once more.

End of service, clean up, lock doors. Out in the alleyway Carmy's already opening her door of his downtrodden Corolla, except Syd doesn't climb in.
She shakes her head and looks at him with those honey-sweet eyes. "My date's picking me up." Syd waves goodnight and climbs into a shiny Jeep instead.
Dumbfounded, blinding headlights reverse, until he's alone in the dark with a heaviness in his chest. Probably indigestion. Sampling close to every dish on their chaos menu did that sometimes. Supposed if he was quick enough to the chemist that a swig of Pepto should do the trick.
But it'd be far better to have his routine back. He needed it. He needed it back.

Was talking always this exhausting? She honestly hasn’t been on enough dates in recent years to compare. Unbidden, her mind drifts to the little bench that forms a right angle out the back entrance of The Bear, and the not-cigarette breaks she takes there. She’s never tired after those: Carmy knows she can be grumpy and awkward and silent during a long day of work, and he likes talking to her anyway.

He pauses, tries to think of someone, to no avail. Carmy rolls his eyes, only sort-of means it. “I don’t see what the point of this is. This is stupid.”
“No duh, because I’m right.”
“Well, we’re sort of friends, right?”
“We work together,”
“Friends can work together,” he tells her pointedly.

Carmen lets silence take over for a second time, clinging to it to try and ease the erratic beating of his heart pounding inside his head. Once he’s steady enough, he breaths all his dread in, feasting in his own misery – an old friend of his, anyway. There are worse acquaintances to make.
He has developed this defense mechanism in which he manipulates himself into believing it can always be worse than it already is; - if his business partner – who, by the way has just recently started trusting him again after the number he put her up to – is now going out on dates for a change, leaving at a perfectly reasonable hour while continuing to meet – exceed in her position as CDC, exposing an overly-enthusiastic attitude towards the subject of, well, dating a mystery guy who drives a fucking Volvo, it can always get worse.
