Hearing the words, it felt like giving up. It felt like the moment the world grew cold and still around him, his body sinking to a place where the midday sun could not reach. His mother tried to reach for him, as he stood hastily from his chair.

His bedroom door was soon slammed behind him, the key turned firmly in the lock. Colin let the bed take the weight of his bones, wishing that it could take the weight of his broken heart. He laid there in pieces for the entire night. As his cheeks grew damp with tears, he thought of the life that he gambled away and the future he had lost because he waited too long.

“His name is Charlie,” he tells his mum when he gets home from school that afternoon. And then, upon seeing her confused face, he clarifies. “The kid I sit next to in form. And I think,” he says, moving into the kitchen and taking down a mug and a tea bag, “he must be in the year below me because I don’t remember ever seeing him around.”
“That’s nice, dear,” she says, before returning her focus to her tablet. And then, after a beat, in a way that Nick thinks sounds a little too casual, “It’s always nice to make new friends.”
His life has been steady for years now, firmly on the path that the universe has destined for him and he finds comfort in the rhythm. But there’s something, a nagging in the back of his mind, the ever present feeling that everything is about to change and he doesn’t understand why the feeling grows stronger every time he says hi to Charlie in the hallway or in form.
