Here are the rules to survive as a civilian in Gotham City:
The first rule is to keep your head down. Don't draw attention to yourself. Don't make eye contact. Walk briskly and with purpose. Don't wear anything flashy that can be stolen and most certainly do not walk down that dark alley.
The second rule is don't be a hero. Avoid confrontations. Walk the other way when you see a standoff. Don't try to help that man getting beat up in the alley, because odds are you'll get killed right along with him. Gotham City has Batman for a reason.
The third and most important rule is this: Don't get involved with superheroes.
Or in your case, gun-toting vigilantes.

“Hey,” Wilbur breaks the silence, making Tommy jump, “I think I saw you out here playing the piano yesterday. You were good, man.”
Tommy’s cheeks color instantly. He didn’t think anyone had heard him, especially not his soon to be stepbrother. “Um, thanks,” he replies, “Phil told me you played, um…something?” he grins sheepishly, not able to remember exactly what the man had told him.
“Yeah, the guitar. I’m actually in a band with some people I met at college,” Wilbur says, offering a more genuine smile this time.
“Oh that’s sick!” Tommy exclaims, and then, because he can’t seem to stop himself, he says, “maybe I can hear you play sometime, you know when we live together?”
Wilbur pauses and Tommy stills entirely. The older tilts his head, giving him an inquisitive look, “yeah, maybe you can.”

Or, Tommy just has to survive his mum's wedding without running into either of her fiance's children. That shouldn’t be too hard (right?)

Its wings spread out to catch it, and their tattered, ruined edges are burning too, embers spilling into the darkened sky as it plummets toward the earth like the last sparks of a dying star. It lives and it breathes and all it knows is agony. It is not only burning, but rotting, and with every rattling breath it feels as though its lungs are being torn asunder, as though its very insides are falling apart into cinders.
It is dying from the inside out, and it thinks, as it lies weightless in the space between the light and the dark, that perhaps this is the fate it deserves.
