The thing about Bucky these days is that, while he might be a semi-mythical assassin, he's also vulnerable—the kind of vulnerable that makes total strangers want to drape a blanket over his shoulders and take him to safety. The problem is, of course, that Bucky is already safe.
The first time it happens, Bucky has no idea how to react. He and Steve are walking down the street, when a slight woman takes in Bucky’s terrified eyes, the dark circles so bad they almost look like bruises, and Steve’s protective hand resting on his lower back, guiding him down the busy sidewalk (but it must look possessive, to someone looking for a sign), and comes to the wrong conclusion.

It feels as if his world is ending around him, with the downpour leaking past his eyelids and his heart beating a rhythm that rattles and echoes through Gotham’s remaining buildings like a chant, pounding against his eardrums.
Across the river, Metropolis is thriving. As much as a city can after a dimensional rip right through the middle, of course, but Metropolis isn’t anything if it isn’t perfect. It’s had its whirlwind of headlines, with every word Bruce reads sending another wave of too-complicated emotions straight through him.
And right of the center of it all, is Superman.

He'd ran his eyes up Lewis' leanly built body that most hybrids had, which Lewis worked so hard on to gain and retain muscle, medium brown skin glistening with sweat, his chest rising with shallow breaths, and met his round eyes, blown nearly twice their normal size and dark with arousal. But also, hesitance. His eyebrows furrowed a bit, cheeks flushed slightly pinkish, and his expressive, pointy dark ears swiveled back, apprehensive.
Like he's— shy.
God, he looked like some weirdo's far fetched porn fantasy, tied up and naked, making that face.
Seb pushed that thought away with vague self-awareness.
"Is this okay?" He asked, making his voice soft, changing his method and petting his thigh at an attempt to soothe.
He wanted this badly, but didn't want the trust between them to waver to get it, he didn't want Lewis to regret this.
"I'm good," Lewis said, but there was an uncertain edge to it. He looked conflicted, as if trying to decide for himself how he feels about this, his vulnerability, like he was trying his best to not close his thighs and hide from Seb's gaze.
Clearly, he just needed some convincing.

And, worst of all, he couldn’t stop thinking about how embarrassing it had been to ask him to hold his hand, only to be met with a simple, “Why?”.
