Summary
There’s no further pounding or banging at the door. Tom opens it slowly, preparing for an ambush. The air smells wrong, sharp with a tang of blood and fear. He starts to step outside, to check in the bushes for anyone waiting to surprise and attack him, and nearly stumbles over the blood-and-mud covered figure slumped on the welcome mat. He really needs to get rid of that thing. Most of this town is no longer welcome in his house.
He’s gotten distressingly possessive of his space these days. He’s not sure if it’s a hybrid thing, or a trauma thing, or maybe both.
All of that runs through his head in the split second before he recognizes the shuddering figure.

They’ll be going up against someone with power and connections and the kind of money to throw around on a place like this. It’s intimidating. But H has gone against worse. “But I need your help. You know how to work this case. So I need you to focus on that. On how much you want justice to be done. That’s what always gets you through every case that comes across your desk. This is no different.”
He can see the tiny spark of determination flicker to life in Jesse’s eyes.
“I think I can do that.”
“I know you can.” -

“Yeah.” Jesse’s voice sounds strained. Ryan looks up, just in time to watch all the color drain out of Jesse’s face aside from two bright spots of red high on his cheeks, before he slips sideways and starts to fall.
Ryan catches him before Jesse can crack his head on the corner of the lab table, but he winces at the heat coming off Jesse’s skin under his hands. Something is wrong. Very wrong.
He doesn’t know if Jesse was anywhere near the body.
But maybe it doesn’t matter.
