Summary
“It’s fine.” Maki considers her own tepid acceptance of the situation, and then adds, “You don’t have to apologise. Things happen.” That’s something that Kaede would say, isn’t it? Or maybe she’d say something more compassionate, more catered to Tenko, like, you can’t help how you feel, you shouldn’t hold back when you feel terrible. It’s too corny for Maki to bring herself to say out loud, even now after she’s gone through and changed so much.
At the very least, Tenko doesn’t seem to be holding out for a platitude like that. She just nods again. “Tenko would talk about it, um, she should talk about it, but it’s nothing, um, new.” She sniffles, and her fingers begin tracing shapes along Maki’s forearms. Accordingly, Maki halts her thumbs, lets Tenko do her thing without interruption. She hopes it’s a tactile comfort, and not something that Tenko will just wind herself up even more doing. “And I don’t—I mean, Tenko does not want to. Talk about it.”
“You don’t have to.”
“But I should,” Tenko responds, almost insistently, her tongue poking out from between her teeth. “Right?”

Summary
Tenko has asked about it a few times, but Maki’s answers have always be evasive at best, outright dishonest at worst. Something about the sheets being too hot, needing a glass of water, getting distracted on her way back from the bathroom… Tenko knows she’s not very smart, and she’s definitely not as smart as Maki is, but she’d like to think she knows Maki well enough now to tell when she’s lying.
She says as much too, and Maki looks away with her lips pursed before changing the subject, so Tenko lets it go. It’s clear that Maki doesn’t want to talk about it, and Tenko doesn’t want to push it, either… She just worries, is all. There are a few things the late-night trips out of bed could point to (insomnia, nightmares, discomfort with sharing a bed) and none of them make Tenko feel all that good. Of course none are Maki’s fault, either, but Tenko would like to be able to support her through them rather than know she’s just silently enduring them for the sake of not looking weak.

Tenko notices that Maki often sleeps restlessly. Tonight, she learns the reason why.

Summary
Swallowing, Kaede turns back around and puts on some approximation of her encouraging smile from the game. It feels awkward and stilted on her lips. Before the simulation she’d been a much more pessimistic person, and it seeps into her interactions even now when she tries to stifle it. But the two who approach her, a couple men her age, seem no less excited to see her, so maybe she pulled it off successfully. Or maybe they just don’t care how she feels.
“Hey!” Kaede greets, bringing pep into her voice that she doesn’t quite feel. “Are you two fans?”
“Well, this guy is,” one of the men, the taller of the two, nudges his companion with a smirk. “Me, I only watch the executions… yours was fucking awesome, by the way.”
Oh, so they’re those kinds of fans.

Kaede goes out for a walk to clear her head after a nightmare. She runs into trouble, but a friend shows up to help.
