Fuck every lickspittle and noble fool who had watched him and judged him and found him wanting because the world had always enjoyed the spectacle of a young man being cut down to size. Fuck the dragon egg that had not broken open, fuck the gods that had left the dragons to die, fuck the whole dead inheritance of it. He let the thought sit in him for a moment, hot and black and comforting in its ugliness, and then turned a page of the book without reading it.
