Summary
In 1945, Steve Rogers and the woman he loves, Peggy Carter, make plans to go on a date. In 2012, Steve wakes up in a SHIELD facility, all of his friends dead, and everything he had known, gone.
But he has the Avengers now, and even though Clint does nothing but play video games, Natasha sharpens her knives just to scare people, Bruce hardly speaks, Thor doesn't know how to work a toaster, and Tony is suddenly being nice and making Steve fall in love with him, Steve finds it hard to completely let go.
And then he hears that Peggy is still alive.
Takes place soon after the events of The Avengers.

Summary
Tony and Steve are bickering and Bruce is sidetracked by his blossoming (and unwanted) attraction to a female S.H.I.E.L.D. agent with some limited psychic abilities. Meanwhile, Thor is learning the fine art of dating on Earth and Clint and Natasha struggle with their own relationship, unsure what kind of relationship that is--whether friends with benefits or something more exclusive. It is clear that Earth's "mightiest heroes" are very much distracted.
So when an enemy kidnaps Pepper in an attempt to get back at Iron Man for some past wrong, they are all caught off guard and don't know how to save her without taking unnecessary risk. Tony, in typical Tony fashion, chooses to disregard Steve's orders and rushes off to save her, with dire consequences.
