They are not of this world, you’d hear him say. They use dark and wicked means to prey on the weaknesses of men, women, children, it didn’t matter. They crudely mimic human faces, hide amongst neighbors. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light, he’d recite.
OR:
An AU in which the old circus Ringmaster had a child, one who was kept in the dark about the true nature of the performances ever since they began. But when your curiosity boils over and fuels you to sneak into the hidden room just inside the main show tent that you were forbidden to enter, you begin to question everything you've ever known, everything you've ever been taught.

Summary
It’s Harlequin’s birthday, and he’s made it abundantly clear he likes things with a bit more spice than sweetness. Even so, you felt like there was something more than desserts you could offer for his birthday. Maybe something to do around town? There was only one problem: not a lot of people in town particularly liked the circus performers and you've rarely if ever seen them out of costume.
It was a little unconventional and required a bit of outside the box thinking, but you had a plan in mind that would allow Harlequin to have a birthday that he deserved.
One where he’s spoiled absolutely rotten.

You've been shadowed by Pierrot and Harlequin for a few weeks now, and as creepy as it had been initially, repetition breeds routine, and routine breeds familiarity. Thus you reluctantly accept the Circus as part of your daily life. What you cannot so easily accept though, is each tempting glimpse you get from beneath their masks.
Something not quite human. Something maybe yet undiscovered. Maybe you could be the first to understand it, to register it. Maybe you would quickly learn why it had remained unregistered for so long.

Summary
You stopped trying to make sense of your odd situation the moment you noticed how warm Pierrot was.
When you realized his voice was only meant for you, when his sharp claws softened against your skin, tenderness overshadowed the danger of it. He somehow always knew what you needed before you did and brought it to you with a puppy-like tilt of his head, smiling with sharp teeth that had grazed your neck more than once, unable to resist himself. He liked to snuggle close, long limbs wrapping around you, muttering sweet nothings while his breath prickled the fine hairs along your skin.

Summary
When the flood of feelings had left his lips, there was silence. He moved his hand as if to touch your face before remembering himself and pulling back.
What beautiful agony was this? To be so in love that it manifests in your chest like a dagger. His eyes filled with tears, which he held back, because he couldn't leave a trace of his visit. He carefully slipped from your bed to kneel on the floor, head bent, unable to bring himself to leave, knowing he must.
...Pierrot comes to visit you at night and has a realization and is basically sad and depressed and needs a hug.
