Pepper understood that Cale was the doom of Tony, the moment the three of them crossed their paths beside the buffet table in the “staff only” area. It was a cold, sinking feeling in her heart, the prophesy of future problems, when her boss, standing beside, was trying — and failing — to keep his face appropriate and not of someone who was lost in… admiration, probably.
She hasn’t met Cale before. She booked him for the gala, sure, among all the other models that were “decorations for the event”, but his — and mostly hers — hectic schedules didn’t align enough, and it wasn’t like she had to meet him at all. Models came and went, their roles temporary and utilitarian.
But she entertained the thought of hiring him for some other events of the Stark company, since… well. The young adult was beautiful. Painfully so.
Now, standing in his proximity for the first time, she realized what a double-edged sword that beauty was. Tony didn’t just see Cale. He noticed him. In a way Pepper had rarely seen him notice anyone who wasn’t connected to a tech patent or another stupid superhero idea. And that, she shouldn’t ignore.

He was cut off midsentence in a jolt, startled by the distinctively booming sound of the door behind him slamming shut. In his shock, he was only able to spin around with an interjection stuck in his throat as he heard the squeaking metal latches being slid into place from the outside, effectively locking the young man in, shrouding him in the dark.
After his heart stopped beating too hard, Techno managed to hear his sisters’ laughter both through the wooden door and in lag through the walkie-talkie.
He swallowed once with a huffed breath.
“Well, shit.”
