Summary
A retelling of Mega Man X. First in the Variables series.
A hundred years have passed since the days of the Blue Bomber, and Dr. Light's legacy has become a legend. During a dig, Dr. Cain stumbles upon the last of Light's creations. A machine that goes by the title of "Mega Man X".
Before he knows it, X finds himself thrown into a world he does not understand, his design used to create a new line of machines entirely. These fully conscious, sentient mechanical beings are known as Reploids.
But the future takes a turn for the worse, and some Reploids begin attacking humans. This new "maverick" behavior led to the creation of an organization dedicated to dealing with these random attacks. This organization became known as the Maverick Hunters.
When the leader of the Hunters, Sigma, rebels and declares war on the humans, he must rise up and use his buster. Even if he despises violence, he must take part in this conflict to save the world.
Because there is no one else that can.

Cassian Roswell is also, through a series of accidents, deeply unfortunate coincidences, and a near-death experience, the human component of BION Model DL-16 "Satellite Galaxy"—a device that sits at the center of a war between the pioneers of modern cybernetics, Light Laboratories, and a mysterious figure only known as "King". One wishes to usher humanity into an age of harmony between flesh and metal, man and machine; the other wishes to rule over them.
Cass is not particularly invested in the nuances of this global game of chess. They just don't want anyone to suffer like they did.
This is, as it happens, exactly what makes them a hero.
