His name left her as a sleepy hum. He stroked her hair, thick and heavy and left to grow wild from all the decisions they had made.
Mikasa didn't say anything else.
He closed his eyes. He would hear it tomorrow. First thing, as brand new sunlight seeped into the cabin, dust in the air; all proof of the passage of time spent together.
Sometimes he could feel the tender stretch of her smile on his shoulder as he heard it. Her light, strong fingers resting on his thigh, her arched foot sliding along his calf beneath body-warmed blankets.
And often she would rise from the bed after she said it, like love was inextricably tied to action for her.

She looks up at him nervously through her lashes, her heart beating out of her chest, “I was invited.”
Eren scoffs, his mouth pulled into a taut line of disgust, “Baby omegas don’t get invited Mikasa, and you still haven’t presented yet so no fucking way.”
“I–” Mikasa struggles to explain herself, unsure what to say since she thought he was the one who invited her, she’d just wanted to prove herself, to please him. Maybe have a shot at him next Monday when the claiming finally happens, some sort of tangible connection between them, something more than this wishful thinking, the instincts roiling deep in her gut.
She never gets the chance to respond properly before Eren is cutting her off, the muscles in his throat tensing, jaw clenched tight.

He does it and he wishes he could notch her hips with his name, black runes etched on her pale skin, evident if anyone got to see her like this one day. The perfect mark warranting he came first, that she had loved him first. Securing she would always belong to him even when he could no longer come back for her.

When he sees what it actually is, he almost wishes it was.
“‘M fine,” Mikasa says. Her breath is coming too fast, too shallow. “Just—cold…”Eren’s eyes shine with wonder, locked on their joint hands and what’s below them; the red spilling out from the gaps in her buttons.
That is not right, Armin thinks, gut churning. That shouldn’t be happening.

Summary
He used to know exactly what Mikasa was thinking just from looking at her. She’d been an honest child, especially when it came to him, unable to keep a secret from him even if she wanted to. It was easy to love her then, when she was small enough to carry on his back wherever they went. When his feelings toward her had a name that he understood.
He doesn’t know when Mikasa started to change, only that now, he has no fucking idea what to do with her. Gone is the happy-go-lucky, starry-eyed preteen who’d trail after him in the woods for hours without complaint. It’s not that he doesn’t love her anymore, he knows now that loving her has become a permanent part of him, the only light he had during those first couple years of dark, when everything seemed hopeless and they found death around every corner.
Or: After a deadly flu pandemic that devastates Paradis Island and the rest of the world, Eren is all Mikasa has. After she turns sixteen, that gets complicated.
