Helen knew Madeline tended to overreact and let her negative feelings take over a lot, but now she was simply losing control. Helen could see she didn’t even know what she was doing anymore. Everything was going too fast, Madeline was almost never home, and when she came back she looked even less like herself than she did in the morning. She was going to hurt herself, if she hadn’t already. It was as if she was standing in front of a cliff, looking down, waiting to see if she was actually going to fall – or maybe waiting for something to push her, she wasn’t really sure anymore. Helen hated this, and she hated that she was somehow responsible for all of this."
