Summary
As the years went by and she completed her accelerated degrees, she grew accustomed to being an island surrounded on all sides by boats that would never dock. She filled her time studying, working hard to become the first person in her family to graduate college. By the time she graduated early from her bachelors degree, she had her sights set on law school. Sally knew she would find people who understood that self-driven ambition was the other side of the coin to a bone deep desire for connection. They had to understand. She just had to become a lawyer, had to become more than she was and they’d find her. She thought she found it, with Warren. They’d sat next to each other in a lecture during their second year of law school. He asked her to compare notes and actually seemed interested in what she’d highlighted. Comparing notes quickly became study sessions which became partner work which turned into pizza nights with less note taking and more talking.
Or; Sally's lonely and doesn't think anyone will ever match her until some hothead in bright red proves sometimes your best match is just the person willing to learn.

Summary
To be fair, the kid did warn him.
“They’re like vultures, Doc. They’ll see what you don’t want ‘em to from miles away and they just pick.” He’d said, lounging on top of the small workbench inside the 95’s trailer. “Harv sensors a lot of ‘em but it always gets harder if I’m winnin’.”
Doc laughed, “And we already know you’re planning on going undefeated.”
The grin he got back was blinding. “You know it!” Lightning pulled both legs up onto the bench, sitting criss-cross, “Just let them slide off your back. They all want their soundbites and one liners so they can rile up the veteran’s fan bases and give the commentators somethin’ to yap about.” he waved off the idea before his voice got quieter, softer. “Just…don’t let them see it gets to you.”
Or; Winning means everyone wants a piece of Lightning McQueen. Too bad there's some pieces that are best left alone.

Summary
“It’s not Lightning, by the way” the kid nearly whispers, picking at the frayed hem on the ankle of his sweatpants.
Doc turns to look at him fully, “What’s not?”
“My name.” He doesn’t make eye contact, refuses to even let Doc try to catch his blue eyes, “Harv had me change it when I started racin’ with him.”
Doc knew Lightning probably wasn’t the kid’s god given name. He’d been around racing long enough to know the different monikers often helped give the racer a break from being the racer when they wanted a second away from it all. He hadn’t known Lightning to share that desire. Lightning McQueen was written in all the court documents from their first meeting, on every check the kid signed to revitalize the town, even the kid’s credit card held the moniker. He’d assumed somewhere along the line, the kid had changed whatever his birth name was to his chosen name. Never really felt the need to question it.
“It’s Montgomery.” Lightning whispered.
Or; Lightning may have bitten off more than he can chew with his new found fame. He thought he was ready to be THE Lightning McQueen, but will he ever not be Montgomery?

Summary
It started with an offhand comment from Mack the day after the damn Piston Cup race. The trucker drove Doc and the kid from California to Radiator Springs late in the night. Lightning’s energy depleted, his eyes drooped with every mile they drove. Eventually the kid’s slow blinks stopped entirely and his chin hit his chest, blond sweat slicked curls obscuring Doc’s view at the rookie’s face.
“Ya know, I’m glad you’re sticking around for him.” he said softly, careful not to wake the youngest, who shifted to lean more fully onto Doc’s shoulder and chest. Doc pulled his arm out from between himself and Lightning and settled it against the back of the cab’s seat behind the kid’s shoulders.
“He’s got a way of growin’ on people” Doc responded, deliberately not thinking about the huge displays of affection both he and Lightning performed mere hours ago.
Or; Doc is really trying not to get attached to the rookie. Too bad no one told Lightning and Mack.

Summary
He’s two years old with water pressing him to the bottom of the YMCA’s pool, heavy from every angle. The chlorine stings at the corners of his eyes, tingeing his vision an artificial light blue even as he stares up at the wavy surface above. He takes deep, unsatisfied breaths, choking down mouthfuls of water in a rapidly slowing panic.
Or; Lightning McQueen only feels like he can breathe when speeding down a racetrack. He's been gasping for air his whole life - so what happens when he can't catch his breath anymore?

Summary
“I don’t want to give up,” Peter whispers. “I don’t want to.”
“We won’t,” Tony whispers back, knowing they’re probably listening. “It’s just—this place—it’s made to drive us crazy, it’s made to—keep us off kilter and confused and doubtful and—”
“Don’t doubt yourself,” Peter whispers, tightening his hold on him. “Or me.”
“I don’t doubt you,” Tony says, rubbing his shoulder. “Ever, okay? You’re the only—thing that matters, alright?”
“You matter,” Peter says, and he lets out a big sigh that someone his age shouldn’t have to contend with.
“You matter,” Tony repeats. “And I just—it’s hard because—I’m the adult, you know? But I had to sort of—I wasn’t exactly a responsible—adult, before they nabbed me, we’ve discussed this—”
“You liked parties—”
“Yeah,” Tony says, a little laugh-sob escaping him, and he’s only told Peter about some of his antics. “But I—I wasn’t ready for…a situation like this.”

"Rhodey?"
"Tony, thank god. Listen, you remember the accident at Oscorp a few weeks ago? It was worse than we thought. People aren’t just getting sick; something is happening to them. They’re changing. That change isn’t a good thing. We need to get out of New York and into the country as soon as possible."Bookmarked by Okbabe
