Summary
“I know you well enough.” Javert’s voice was an acerbic rasp. “That knife suits you better."
“Hush. Be still.”
Valjean's rough fingers were under his chin now, somehow avoiding the rope that sank its teeth deeper into him with every motion, and tilting his head upwards with a surprisingly gentle grip. There is always bitterness and spite when Valjean and Javert clash. Sometimes, to Javert's dismay, there is also kindness.

Summary
Curse him. Curse his name and this supposed gift he’d given of life. Even Javert’s final thought, submerged willfully in the cold waters of the Seine, was littered with the remnants of Jean Valjean. Let him be free. Let the water wash away the curse inflicted on his soul. Let him die now, too tormented to wait in agony for a natural death, even if it meant the remainder of his soul would go to Lucifer’s domain. Let his eternal life be one of misery, as he deserved. Perhaps Valjean would meet him there, but Javert did not think it so.
.
Rescued from the Seine by a determinably anonymous benefactor, Inspector Javert struggles to cope with the consequences of being left alive.

Summary
Instead of committing suicide, Javert goes on a three-day bender. When Valjean finds him, Javert assumes he's a hallucination. Things proceed awkwardly from there.
--
“Where are you going?” the hallucination asked, which was foolish. Surely his brain knew what Javert planned.
“To the nearest--” Javert paused, looked at the recently vacated wine-ship, and amended what he had been about to say. “To the next wine-shop. Obviously I am not drunk enough if you are here.”
The apparition got to its feet with a wince, as though his mind had ridiculously conjured aches and pains with which to torment Valjean’s specter. “Javert, your words make no sense,” it said, and Javert laughed again.
“I am making perfect sense.” He touched his pocket where he kept his money, frowned. “I hope you are only a drink or two from going away. I do not know how much more beer I can afford.”

Summary
He did not know how to proceed. He was an unmoored raft, bobbing in the middle of the vast ocean. All his life he had anchored himself with the guidance of authority. As a boy, it was the criminal code. As a man, his direct superiors. After his fall, it was God.
What authority now, to dictate the actions of his poor old heart?
-
Post-Seine. Javert, hopelessly confused by his newfound feelings towards Jean Valjean, chose to heed a piece of advice from the papers and decided to keep some distance. But when Valjean disappeared, he realised his actions might have had consequences he'd never intended, or dreamt of.
