    David is quitting.

He’s had enough of working for a photography company with an off-the-books philosophy of "sleaze and cheese", he's had enough of getting forced into assignments at the last minute when the company president decides he's flitting off to party with D-list celebrities instead. He’s quitting. This is, in fact, his last job.

At least it's an easy shoot - a puff piece on some up-and-coming Canadian singer-songwriter on the indie circuit who's just been catapaulted to widespread fame. No complications, no controversy. He'll be in his apartment and wallowing in his bamboo-silk sheets before he knows it.

A PhotographerDavid fic inspired by THAT photo shoot by Vanessa Heins.

“You promised you’d be quiet,” he says into the dark curls at Alex’s base, the warm puff of his breath sending shivers over every inch of Alex’s skin. He presses the back of his head into the smooth wood of the door and lets out a choked little sound that might, in a different universe, have been a laugh.

“Well, just. Stop being so good at that, then.”

It’s Henry’s turn to laugh, a chuckle that’s low and dark and hooks into Alex somewhere deep behind his belly button. “I don’t really think you want me to do that, love.”

Or, Henry and Alex pay a proper farewell.

“Constant fear is debilitating,” Alex tells him later on. The sun has risen, though it’s barely prominent through the dark clouds in the sky. “Even in the world we live in now, you need to find the things that make it feel…normal.”

Of course, Alex isn’t even sure that makes much sense, and he thinks about doubling back on what he just said with something stupid and word-vomitty, whatever pops into his head first, but Henry beats him to it. Much more suitable, and it puts Alex’s mind at ease:

“I’m starting to think you’re right.”

The world ended three years ago. No more all-night study sessions, no more drag brunch and mimosas, no more societal expectations.

But out of everything Alex was expecting from an apocalypse, Henry sure as hell wasn't it.

The year is 1885, they're in New York City, and the hottest ball of the year has arrived -- Ellen Claremont-Diaz's New Years' Masquerade. Women are decked out in their finest, men have had their suits freshly pressed, and all faces are covered with masks of all shapes and sizes. Amidst the swirling color and coordinated chaos are Henry and Alex, drawn to each other inexplicably.
