Last she'd seen Julien, he'd been standing guard outside, unable to be persuaded that it wasn't necessary. Thaisha wasn't sure if it was because she was the one asking or if he just couldn't stand the idea of doing nothing.
Now, though, he was nowhere to be found. Thaisha frowned and did a quick loop before she went to the next most likely place for him to be.
The door to Aranessa's borrowed room was still half-open, and Thaisha peeked inside to find her not in bed, but sitting on the small couch on the other side of the room, eyes fixed on nothing in particular. Thaisha could see her only in profile, but she could tell that she hadn't slept.
Or: Thaisha gets a glimpse of Aranessa and Julien, in the wreckage of all they've lost, and starts to understand how little she understands him.

Because the Palazzo Davinos has apparently already been swept clean of everything but memory. Julien Davinos stands next to her, still covered in gore, but his freshly cleaned hands are held at the ready for the stack of deep red quilts she manages to unearth. The blankets have been perfumed with lavender and sage from the family herb garden, and some of the dried leaves have escaped their sachets and scattered across the stitching. It's fine. They’ll do.

Halandil stared at the spot from where his brother vanished. In his mind he knew that this was the outcome that he was expecting, the one that they had planned for. But it was different between planning, prepping, and pulling strings, and actually seeing the plan through. It made him a little numb, and it wasn't until the crowd began to move as crowds do when something is amiss that he zoned back in and thought about how this is going to be perceived by the Houses and the guard that he finally picked up another sound. The shifting of armor.
The shifting of armor grew until it could be heard despite the growing murmurs of the crowd, before suddenly it stopped. Hal had just enough time to turn back to the wall where the empty hangman's noose fluttered in the breeze before there is a crack of thunder and a body went flying though the shattered doors.
Or; Thjazi Fang escapes, an arcane marshal is to blame, someone gets a little jumpy with putting a dagger into Azune's back, and things quickly devolve from there.

It is becoming easier, almost, to adjust to the new way of life. He has switched to using his left hand to cast the spell, and the effects are creeping further and further up his left arm with each passing day, even if they vanish by the next morning.
But that is an understandable price to pay. A reasonable price, if it keeps everyone else safe. It doesn’t matter, really, if he has started to find more and more lacerations from stray waves of shadow each morning as he lies in his untouched bed. It doesn’t matter that the pupils of his eyes, when he gazes into the reflective glass of the captain’s desk, are starting to disappear entirely. Nor that he will sometimes start at the faint feeling of fingers threading around his neck, tracing the line of his cheek.

The Rocks family is safe. Any price is worth that.
