It was an accident and he really didn't mean to and he's really sorry. And Odysseus dies (not literally) by laughing at the gods and fate because the oracles work in mysterious ways.

Odysseus felt his chest heaving up and down as he struggled to breathe.
“Can’t you see?”
Odysseus’ head was spinning, throbbing painfully. From the wound in his stomach? From nearly drowning just moments prior? From the raging storm surrounding him? Who knows. But it was all a buzzing in the back of his skull as he stared down at the being in front of him.
“You sealed your fate, just to beat me.”
Poseidon was in front of him, laying against a jagged stone. He was trembling, slightly, and there was a breath of pain to his voice. Yet the grin on his face remained proud and spiteful.
Odysseus wanted to tear that look right off.

Summary
Poseidon meets Odysseus on the shores of Ithaca, and offers him a deal. To create a perfect copy of the man, one version free to go onto his home, the other to be bound to Poseidon. Divine storm raging around them, Odysseus sees very few options left, desperation great, and accepts. So Poseidon drags him under the sea, taking him to the lost civilization of Atlantis to see Odysseus break.
Neither could have expected the feelings that start growing, even past their anger towards each other.
