“I hear a gun go off, and I expect to see that motherfucker on the ground. But I don’t.”
Hotch looks like he wants to be sick.
“I- I don’t remember which one of us shot him, but I remember reaching you and there’s just so much blood, and it hasn’t even been thirty seconds and you already look dead, and you’re- you’re not even fighting anymore, Aaron. They’re all asking me questions: why didn’t Hotch shoot him? Is he gonna make it? Why did he do that? Why did he just let himself be fucking killed?
“I didn’t have any answers for them, because, for the first time since I met you, I didn’t know who you were.”
At that, Aaron collapses to his knees.

“Battle changed his mind at the last second,” Dave said, his voice too cool. Too calm for someone covered in his best friend's blood. “I'm going to Aaron's house to grab a few things, half of you need to stay here and lock this down, the other half get to the hospital. I don't care who goes where, just get it done. I'll be at the hospital as soon as I can.” His tone chilled all of them to the bone, he was furious. It was a side of Dave they had yet to see, and it was unsettling.“He's got a key to Hotch's place?” Spencer asked, turning to watch Dave stalking toward the elevator, wiping his bloody hands all over his jeans, just trying to clean his fingers enough to press the button. It didn't work, he left a bloody fingerprint behind anyway. Derek and Emily shot each other a confused look and shrugged, taking in the intensity of the scene surrounding them. How Spencer could be focused on that, neither of them understood.
“Let it go, kid,” Derek replied, patting his friend on the shoulder. “It's none of our business. Get to the hospital with Prentiss, I'll stick around here with Garcia and JJ. We'll be there as soon as we can.”

He thought if he moved or made any notion that he wasn’t feeling great, the team would be on him in a second, making sure that their youngest member wasn’t in any pain. He didn’t hate them for that, in fact he found it almost endearing, but it made him feel a bit awkward. They already babied him enough. Besides, there wasn’t really anything for him to throw up anyway. He couldn’t remember why. He just knew he hadn’t eaten anything substantial in awhile. He could if he tried; if he allowed himself to put a little more effort into thinking. But he didn’t feel like it. For one of those rare moments in his life, he didn’t want to think at all. He just wanted to rest.
