Summary
No one dares to cross paths with the Shura, not even invading armies would take the risk, choosing to abandon the land they had planned and fought for so fiercely. The demon’s name strikes fear in any mortal’s heart, none brave enough to confront a being synonymous with calamity.
None, but the other cursed souls that roam the crumbling land.
Among these, the Headless are some of the most fearsome.
This time, however, there appears to be a new spirit that has taken claim to the ruined castle.
Another Headless, a fresh one, with a grudge so strong it fills the castle grounds with its dark ghostly mist that would leave any human paralysed and seizing in terror.
Immediately, its visage is recognisable: A former adversary whom he’d crossed swords with several times before. A man who ran only on the desperation of saving his country, who had welcomed heretical arts and agony upon himself to reach his goals.

"Is there any way we can save him?" the young lord asks, prompting a surprised look from the Wolf. He is hesitant at first, but if it is his lord's will, then so be it.
"...Are you sure, my lord?"
Kuro's gaze does not waver as he nods again. "Yes."

Summary
Genichiro could have stayed there forever, eyes closed as blood poured from his neck, drawing in Wolf’s scent like a drug. He’d gotten hints of it before— with Wolf’s sword buried in his guts. Wolf’s knees bent, bracing himself against Genichiro’s weight as he drove his blade in deep, Genichiro muttering the only prayer he knows.
Ashina, Ashina.
Wolf is the most vicious creature Genichiro has ever met, but he smells like lotus and sakura and something in Genichiro unspools every time he pulls him into his lungs. There is no such thing as a destined mate, in spite of what all the folklore says, but compatibility is a powerful thing.
Wolf is a powerful thing. Genichiro cannot help but want him.

Summary
Wolf draws his sword.
It is futile, but there is nothing else to do. The path that led them all here is littered with his failures, and there is nowhere to go but forward. Kusabimaru glints in the moonlight. It isn’t something he should call his own. It is old, and beautiful— a weapon that belongs in Hirata hands.
There are none of those left, save Kuro’s, and it is Wolf’s duty to wield it for him. His duty to raise it, even against the lord of Ashina.
Genichiro has a stillness about him that sets Wolf alight. He is calm. Untroubled. It does not matter that Wolf has come to take Kuro back from him. Nothing will change unless he wills it so; not Ashina.
Not this.
Wolf cannot stand against him, but he doesn’t know how to stop. There is no place in him for yielding, no room to admit defeat. Genichiro is merciless. Genichiro is strong. There is a purity to being destroyed so thoroughly. A clarity to such indisputable loss.
Oh, Wolf thinks, his arm arcing through the air with blood trailing it like silk.
I want him.

Summary
Genichiro was often close now, even when he wasn't. Wolf could detect him by his scent alone, and knew when he was walking down a hallway which Genichiro had just passed through. There were several areas throughout the castle which bore his scent permanently. The areas around his quarters, a dojo on the top floors, the lookout tower.
The few times their eyes met, a warmth lingered in the air. Wolf looked at Genichiro and wanted something, but he couldn’t find the words to give it shape. Such things had never been known to him.

“Our agent followed Genichiro for some time,” Lady Butterfly told him with an exhale. “She was sent to capture and deliver him to the Ministry. They offered us a hefty price for his head, and even more if it arrived still attached to his body.”
Wolf nodded, saying nothing.
“She failed in this, but returned with important information. Genichiro Ashina, it seems, is not interested in women.”
Wolf’s eyes widened in realization, and Lady Butterfly gave him a wry grin.
“You see now, why you have been chosen.”

Wolf's father lays dead behind him, but his words still echo in his mind. The simplicity of following orders is his only comfort, but soon, it won't be enough. He can taste it in the air, beneath all the ash.

Summary
There is peace; it doesn’t belong to him.
Genichiro is looking down at him, sword drawn again. He is blood streaked, too. Haloed with lightning.
He is merciless and strong and infinite. Wolf has put his sword in Genichiro and cut him to pieces, and yet here he is, weapon raised and eyes alight. Genichiro is endless, the way Wolf is endless.
Wolf crawls forward and pulls himself onto his knees, running a gory, shaking hand up the back of Genichiro’s calf. He shoves his face into the inside of Genichiro’s thigh, nuzzling into it and looking up at him from underneath his lashes. He wants to tuck his nose into the warm place where Genichiro’s thigh joins his hip, but he isn’t tall enough like this, and being on his knees is more important than anything else. It is where he is meant to be; at the feet of someone powerful. Waiting.
Obedient.
Genichiro fists a hand in his hair and throws him backwards, hissing something at him. Wolf lands in an inelegant sprawl. Lands badly. It hurts, but the pain is distant compared to the arrows still in his body. The burns, the cuts, the shattered bones. Still, Wolf has had worse, and always from the ones he loved.
Now, it is no different.

Summary
Wolf blinks up at the sky through eyes that want to stay closed. The sunlight is filtered through the trees, faint as it always is in Ashina, but even that hurts to look at. In Ashina, Wolf thinks.
He is back in the depths of Ashina, washed there from the flooded palace, just more runoff from the gods. Another dead thing that cannot be allowed in the heavens.
Wolf is not surprised to be one of them. He closes his eyes and thanks the waters; it is not the first time he has prayed, but it is the first time he has meant it.
His thoughts are thick like melted sugars, stuck together too long in his pouch and misshapen against one another. Breathing hurts. Existing hurts. Wolf is so thirsty but no matter how much he drinks, it is not quenched.
Wolf is hungry, but the thought of hunting game to roast over a fire makes his stomach churn with disgust. He thinks of the enemies in the divine realm, and their blood heavy over his tongue.
Wolf needs to find someone. Anyone.
Wolf needs to go home.

Summary
Those who suffer unrequited love are bound to die, bound to wither and become part of the land they devoted themselves to. To wither like an unwatered flower, slowly fading a painful death before they are swallowed by Ashina itself.
Genichiro vowed not to end up the same way. He will bring glory to Ashina again.
He believed in that for years, throwing his all into his clan and its people. He steeled his heart and remained unmoved by anything or anyone throughout his life.
That is, until he met him.

None of it mattered. All that mattered was the rut, now worse than it had ever been. Genichiro’s brain pounded against his skull, his nose pressing greedily into the sheets. Wolf’s scent was still there, but only just.

Or, Genichiro's rut hits at an inopportune moment, and he becomes fixated on a certain shinobi to help him see it through.
