Summary
“You hesitate,” the Grand Inquisitor noted, his voice dropping to a soft, insidious murmur. “I can see it in you, Kestis, the defiance, the conflict. You haven’t crumbled yet, haven’t surrendered to despair like so many others. That’s good. It means there’s still fire in you. And fire, when controlled, can forge something far stronger than the brittle ideals of the Jedi. We offer you more than mere chains, Kestis. We offer you purpose, training, and power.”
Cal’s fingers twitched; the lure of power wasn’t really something that interested him. For all the Grand Inquisitors posturing, he clearly knew nothing about him.
Cal only wanted power over himself.
Left reeling from betrayals and fighting, Cal returns to the fortress. Done with being on the back foot, Cal decides that he'll play the Grand Inquisitors game but he is going to do it on his own terms.
Sequel to The Choices We Make but can be read independently.

Summary
Cal wasn’t usually the kind to take breaks, but it was nice to spend time with the crew when they weren’t running for their lives. Not that being chased didn’t have its moments. It could be fun sometimes, in a reckless barely-get-out-alive kind of way. But this time had been a bit too close to the ‘barely’ and even Cal had to admit that.
While the recovery from Nur continues, Cal struggles with the past. Cal and Merrin find a quiet moment on a beautiful planet and take in the galaxy.

The Inquisitor doesn’t seem to find it as funny as Cal does. “And why is that so unbelievable, young one? Your hate is impressive. Your fear already rules you. You are one of us already, even if you don’t accept it yet.”
“Black isn’t really my colour.”
(Or: The Second Sister captures Cal on Bracca, and Cal Kestis cements his place in the history books as the worst Inquisitor to ever do it. He keeps helping the rebels, and befriending droids. It’s embarrassing, really.)
