She huffs out a laugh, brings her mouth back into a frown before he can enjoy it. “Fine. Take my number, but don’t text me. Don’t need the paper trail.”

Summary
Carmen lets silence take over for a second time, clinging to it to try and ease the erratic beating of his heart pounding inside his head. Once he’s steady enough, he breaths all his dread in, feasting in his own misery – an old friend of his, anyway. There are worse acquaintances to make.
He has developed this defense mechanism in which he manipulates himself into believing it can always be worse than it already is; - if his business partner – who, by the way has just recently started trusting him again after the number he put her up to – is now going out on dates for a change, leaving at a perfectly reasonable hour while continuing to meet – exceed in her position as CDC, exposing an overly-enthusiastic attitude towards the subject of, well, dating a mystery guy who drives a fucking Volvo, it can always get worse. Summary
Sydney thinks that if she found out she was pregnant a little earlier she probably wouldn’t have gone through with it. Like, if she found out before her landlord changed the locks on her apartment, or before the bank sent her all those red letters, or before the pasta dried up, she’d probably have just taken herself to Planned Parenthood, popped the pills and charged it to the game. But as it is, the two blue lines appear on the stick during the worst months of her life, the first months of the pandemic when she’s unemployed and shit scared that her dad is going to get coronavirus and die. And when she sees them, she just thinks: well, this might as well happen. She was a disappointment before. What’s one more thing?
Before she meets Carmy, Sydney has a baby.

Summary
Carmy has always avoided therapy. So afraid to go. Scared to prod at unhealed wounds. and to unearth more emotional baggage that he's quite frankly too tired to tend to.
Anyway, he had figured that equilibrium would find him eventually. His fucked state had always been his normal. Everyone had their issues. And yeah, his family came with a lot more than the standard bunch, but fuck it. It was just up to him to figure it out. It’s like a bouillon cube. If you pop it in your mouth, you’ll find it so salty and concentrated you can’t even swallow it. You need to add water to break up all its components- alter it, to find the “sweet spot”- that perfect balance of flavors. So, that’s what he figured he’d do. He’d dilute all those experiences down into something palatable.
But, actually, he’s realizing way too late that he’s a stock in a scalding hot pot. Heat was the culprit all along, messing up the flavors, concentrating and condensing them into something vile and inedible. Now the heat’s threatening to scald it to nothingness.
He’s tried a lot to control the stock from within, but that won’t move him from off the hot eye.
Therapy, he's guessing, is the only viable option.
