Summary
"How long?" the man eventually asks. He's not looking at Joe, simply regarding the floor, hands clasped loosely between his thighs.
Joe scratches his nose idly. "Six years."
The man looks up and over, surprised. "You were young."
"We met when I was twenty," Joe confirms, old sadness tugging at the corner of his mouth. “We had seven together.”
Nodding, the man looks back to the floor. He's quiet for a long time, minutes possibly. And then;
"Seven months, for me," he says, very softly, and roughly. And oh, Joe's heart aches for him.
In a world where soulmates are predestined, life after love seems impossible. Joe and Nicky give it a go anyway.

Summary
Nicolò looks sheepish. "I killed you yesterday, and you awoke at the same time, the same place. But when I die, I wake at different times, different places. This bolt," he tosses it to Yusuf and it lands in the dirt by his knee, "it killed me yesterday, but I woke up many years from now. I lived several lifetimes in those places before returning here and pulling it from my neck."
Nicky's lives and deaths are different. He is unstuck from time - at every death he revives into a different point in his life. Each time he is struck down he wonders, will he awaken to deserts and swords? Will it be gunshots in cities? Joe and Nicky build a fractured life together, falling in love across two different sets of centuries, then patiently waiting for the other to fall in love too. He meets the rest of their little family out of order, but they still build a family around Nicky's involuntary time-traveling.

Summary
The man threads his fingers through Nicky’s, pressing their bloodied palms together. The roar of panic rushing in Nicky’s chest lessens at the touch. Through some instinct, he squeezes the man’s hand.
The melancholy look on the man’s face fades as he squeezes back.
Who are you, Nicky wonders, but in a way it seems unimportant. Just as he knows the word for the acrid smell in the air, he knows that the man is to be trusted.
After being shot in the head, Nicky loses his memories. He doesn’t remember who he is now, or who he was almost 900 years ago. Joe’s not sure which of those things is worse.
