Summary
EMCOM missions were the worst, in his opinion. Limited radio contact, no one to talk to but yourself, and even then it wasn’t advised that you do much talking at all. They were especially draining when you flew them solo, without another jet to interact with in any way. Just yourself and the dark abyss of the night sky for hours on end.
Maverick was getting pretty sick of them, having pulled almost exclusively EMCON missions or solo night patrols for the last two months. He was starting to believe he’d forgotten how to even talk to another human being. It had been so long since he’d interacted with someone in anything other than procedural manners.

Ice ignored the laughter that rang out through the locker room and focused on getting his gear put away so he could shower and make his way to a base clinician who’d handle the feathers Ice couldn’t manage. As he walked past Maverick toward the showers, he tried not to pay attention to the effortless way Maverick’s hands moved across Goose’s wings or his apparent ease at helping his friend.
Ice has been taught that preening is a necessary but impersonal activity. Maverick has other ideas.

Summary
Until several weeks into Top Gun, Slider isn’t sure what Goose sees in his pilot, isn’t sure what makes him so loyal to the little shit. Because, for all that Maverick is Ice’s equal (or near equal, yeah, yeah, Ice) in the air, he’s still a scrappy little shit on the ground.
In this story, the events of the original Top Gun will be revisited, tragedy explored, and then onward to the Mission and reconciliation. This started out as a thought experiment inspired by 'Government Documents Stolen for the Ghost of You' by RevengeIsRead and evolved from there.
