It's hard not to think of the future when things are like this, when things are easy. If Vergil could capture this moment of peace, wrap it up and store it somewhere impenetrable so that nothing can ever destroy what he has stumbled onto, he’d likely do it at a moment's instance. To be able to shield his son, prevent him from experiencing atrocities that Vergil knows to be too much for a child to handle, it's something he has strived to achieve for as long as he has had his son.
(And he wants his son to be strong, of course, but the idea of letting that pain infect his son is… unnecessary. Repetitive flashes of previous nightmares, the various dances he’s had with Death– his stomach tightens and he stops that line of thinking immediately. No need to think of any of that while he is here.)

Summary
With Dante and Vergil trapping themselves in the underworld, Nero was left in human world to defend Redgrave or what was left of it. Nero tried to be patient and hoped that he would do something that would make his blood bound family proud of him. What he didn't expect was Dante calling in a babysitter to look after Nero.
