He rolled onto his side, every movement causing a deep pulse in his head and a sharp pain in his left lumbar region. Eventually he had rolled over enough to get his arms underneath himself and he started to push himself up.
“Uunghh!” He cried out in anguish, falling back onto his forearms and pressing his forehead against the ground. His mind was blank, filled with nothing but pain that became more intense as he tried to remember… well… anything.

Spock simply raised an eyebrow at his mother.
“It’s an Earth custom, a tradition even! Most boys your age get a job before they go off to college.”
“I am not going to college, I am in the process of applying to the Vulcan Science Academy.” Spock replied.
“I know honey, but we’re going to be here for about 4 months, you’ll need something to do.”

Spock is spending the summer on Earth. Jim just graduated high school and is promoted to general manager at the Dairy Queen he's been working at. Enemies->Friends->Lovers in the Dairy Queen?? Yes. We love the shitty summer job you get before college.

Enterprise is safe to fly another day. All thanks to Captain James T. Kirk's sacrifice. He's made peace with his death, even though it breaks his heart one final time to see the hurt in Spock's eyes. Still, the last thing he gets to see is the face of one of his dearest friends... until his eyes snap back open. Not in a hospital. In a shuttle as it lands at the Academy.
“Once you exit the shuttle you are free to return to your dorms. Those of you who are new, you’ll follow me to registration and physicals,” a vaguely familiar-looking officer says, and Jim’s heart stops in his chest. Surprising, considering it shouldn’t be beating at all.
