Which is why he tries to help where he can, giving the benefit of the doubt even to those who have been rude to him for no reason. With the death of the tadpole, Astarion had lost his freedoms, once again plagued by the pitfalls and hang ups of his vampirism. He had lost the power of the unholy ascension. He had lost his chance to ever be a full vampire. Ever since the tadpoles died, Astarion had always seemed a little fractured and fragmented. His mouth wore a smile but he seemed to be thousands of yards away behind his eyes. Gale never wanted to see him like that. Since then, Gale had made it his unilateral mission to make sure Astarion never wanted for anything again.

Glasses looked away shyly, and Astarion couldn't even bring himself to be annoyed that Karlach was right. Most of the time when he went out like this, he had only a passing interest in whoever he ended up going home with. They were a good meal. Something to occupy the long, endless nights. Maybe a little pleasure, if they knew what they were doing. Content to let potential lovers come to him, Astarion rarely pursued anyone in particular. He hadn't wanted anyone in particular.

Summary
He can see it now: Their team toppled over, exhausted, hope lost. Bloodied, battered and bruised… sobbing at the acceptance of death before them. And then the wizard turns around. He imparts them a quiet melancholy smile. His eyes flicker to Astarion's and the vampire sees it: the decision made without his input. Gale mouths an, “I love you,” before snapping his fingers. Astarion and the rest are teleported to safety and in the distance they see an explosion.
Astarion shakes his head, “No! Stop!” His hand frees from under his lover as he rubs both his hands across his face. Gale awakens suddenly, eyes wide and in a split second he's up running his hands through his curls, soothing the rogue.
“My love! Are you alright? What ever is the matter?!”
Astarion swats his hands away. “You! You fool! And you would do it, too!”

This was suddenly much, much bigger than just Astarion and the scars on his back and the nightmares that haunted him. There was, in fact, a very solid chance that Astarion was the sole living victim that could help unravel whatever horrors had taken place.
They looked at each other for a long moment; he could see nothing but pure fear in Astarion’s eyes.
“I’m fucked,” Astarion finally said. “Fuck. FUCK HIM,” he howled, doubling over again, sobs tearing out of him. “This was supposed to be OVER,” he finally managed to get out.

Nearly a year after the events of Price Tag, Wyll and Astarion have settled into a comfortable life together.
Comfortable, that is, until the day Wyll comes home to find Astarion trembling under the table, a crumpled newspaper in his hands.
Wyll had thought it was over. Unfortunately, it seems that Astarion may be the key to unlocking the truth of Cazador Szaar.
