And that nugget of information was apparently one Volo was otherwise very reticent to share, going by how he clams up for the next three hours.
Which, normally would be and ostensibly is fine, preferred even, to maintain the quiet of the library. But that slip had intrigued Magpie so entirely that she spent the entire time trying to prod him into speaking. If he was a man, when was he born? Where? How long had he been… transformed? How was he transformed? Each question, written increasingly illegibly on post-it notes, went ignored, batted away, and eventually tossed through a gilt ring plucked from Volo’s horn to vanish into nothing. The last, at least, brings that snide little grin back to his crooked mouth.

After this little dance, this circling of hunting animals, they stand chest to chest. Briar’s breath, coming just a little faster than before after what must be the latest denial of many, stirs the tassels of Raifort’s shirt, the lowest silken strands of her hair. Grey eyes hooding, she raises her free hand until one long finger curls under the other’s chin, a furl of mahogany beneath ivory-pale.

Summary
Wander starts to hiss back, and wonders how the temple doesn't thaw around them with the way the teasing term sets his skin alight with ruddy color. He flushes from toe to temple, and the cooling salve of Volo’s tongue doesn’t go unappreciated. Before he can manage more, though, Volo grips them both hard and nips at his neck.
“I don’t think I will, Mr. Detective,” he says, and he can feel the brush of lips as he speaks, the fan of breath. “You see, I have a great interest in seeing you crumble to my whims, to see you tremble and beg…”
He pauses, sucking in a breath, and it's long enough for Wander to realize that Volo is entirely in control. Then –
“Do you think you can do that for me?"
