Summary
They go higher and higher, wind in Ash’s hair and laughs falling out of his mouth and beautiful, sloping views, and Ash is never more grateful that Professor Kukui offered his loft back when he first came. Alola is truly something else. It is home in a way nothing else has been home in a very long time. He has grown used to the feel of salt in his hair and sand on his skin, and Ash can’t even fully describe the extent of his feelings toward the professor.
It’s weird, anyway; Ash has never had someone like that. He’s had Mom, he’s always had Mom. But it has always just been the two of them. Which he loves the two of them.
But it is just Ash and Professor Kukui now, the two of them, and it is different and so, so familiar, and the feel of a strong arm around his shoulders has become comfortable in a way almost nothing else is.

Something creased and white was floating around the white-dashed lanes, blown about and torn into as cars sped by. At one point the map landed on the windshield of a taxicab. The driver stuck his fist out of the window and shook it like he was giving the navigation tool a piece of his mind, then sprayed the innocent paper with glass cleaning fluid before swiping the thing off with the wipers and leaving it a soggy mess on the asphalt.
It was the only marked map Leo and Percy had to find the new demigod. Now they’d be flying completely blind.
Leo took another look around the intersection. Correction: Leo would be flying blind. Percy was still nowhere to be found.

Gabi comes over to where they’re sitting, pressing a steaming mug into Ash’s hands. “I heard you’re the Champion of Alola now, yes? Good. Good. You’re a Pokemon Master, now, yes? That’s what you always wanted to be.”
The warm expression that crosses Ash’s face is truly one that is special, Kukui thinks. It’s one he doesn’t see often; Ash smiles so much, in a way that feels like he didn’t as much in other regions. It’s just a feeling Kukui has, really, knowing what he knows about his kid. He smiles so much, but it’s always this huge, bright, smile. It’s not too often there’s that softness, usually reserved for when Pikachu falls asleep, or when he’s feeling extra loved by him and Burnet, or when he stops in the middle of eating one of his Kukui burgers and just reflects.
