He notices it from an early age, the way he seems to work differently from everyone. They struggle with basic literature while he can read complex sentences, he can do mental maths while they have to write the problem out. He wants to be a normal kid with normal friends but life just has a way of sticking a knife right in his back.

It starts like this, a week living in a tent. The wind blew ferociously and he spent each night shivering with one blanket to keep him warm. Barely interacting with his family, that was almost a relief, and having nothing to do but schoolwork, that wasn’t so bad it just didn’t take up his time as much as he wished it would, the curse of being smart.
There was one crucial part of that week, the lack of food. Turns out he was rather easy to forget, nobody came to get him, he wasn’t even given lunch to take to school. There were a few late bowls of cereal but for the most part he just starved.
The weight seemed to drop off.

Summary
Malcolm wasn’t really sure when he stopped eating, when he started arguing with his parents at the dinner table and avoiding his family. He could justify it in his mind because his family were poor so now that he didn’t eat they had more left over food which in turn gave them extra spending money.
Malcolm wasn’t an idiot, literally he wasn’t he had an IQ of 165 and excelled at school so he understood the basic fact that people needed to eat. Food provided energy to live and Malcolm did want to live but he wanted to live without having to eat.
It had nothing to do with his body, he wasn’t trying to lose weight instead it was more of a punishment.
Day 24: “I’m doing this because I care about you.”
