Summary
Lance tipped his head back and looked up at the tall ceiling of the ballroom. It was something he couldn’t help but do now that he was an experienced sniper. He followed the line of two pillars up and up, past the balcony and into the rafters. There—that was the best spot. You’d be able to see everything from there: the ballroom floor, the balcony, even the entryway all the way to the main doors.
He wasn’t expecting to see something shift though, and he watched in horror as a masked and cloaked figure appeared, lining up a rifle and pointing down into the crowd of people on the ballroom floor.
Or: A diplomatic gala takes an unexpected turn when Lance intercepts an assassination attempt on one of their allies. Leaving Lance injured and the others scrambling for answers, they enter a race against the clock to find who is responsible. They don’t know who did it, no one’s coming forward, and Lance is running out of time.

It’s nothing like those Boy Scout lectures—ones he never really wanted to attend, anyway—where they droned on about the stages of trauma and what to expect in an emergency. Those were clean, clinical lessons, delivered with the certainty that everything could be fixed if you followed the steps.
No one mentioned how his own heartbeat would drown out every other sound, how the pain would radiate through his body in waves, making his thoughts crash like flotsam on jagged rocks.
No one told him how cold it would get. How lonely.
