Summary
Zoey gave an amused sigh and raised their joined hands.
After a moment’s hesitation, Mira placed her hand on Zoey’s waist. Even with a T-shirt in the way, she could feel the shape of her friend’s body beneath her fingers. Her cheeks flared. Was it okay to be this close to Zoey—even for a dance? They had never danced like this before.
It was probably the first time she’d ever been this close. Even during movie nights, they didn’t sit this close.
Mira’s hips were pressed to Zoey’s, one hand in hers, fingers intertwined, and the other on her waist. It was an intimacy that didn’t belong in a dance studio.

Summary
Zoey sighed, leaning her back against the cool tiles.
It was one bed, one bed.
She could already picture the scene that would play out when she walked out of this short-lived safe place. Mira would spread herself out in the middle of the bed, blanket hoarded with no remorse, while Zoey would be curled up on the very edge of the bed, one shift away from falling on the floor. Yet there’d still be limbs. There’d still be accidental touches. And, at some ungodly hour, Mira would turn over in her sleep and somehow drape an arm over Zoey.
The chances of surviving this night were growing slimmer by the second.
She buried her face in her hands, a groan escaping her. It wasn’t even the physical closeness that terrified her – it was the what ifs. What if Mira murmured something while half asleep? What if she smiled at her in the dark without even realising? What if she cuddled even closer to her while asleep, acting as if Zoey was the last source of heat on the planet? Nothing seemed all that intimate on paper, yet the lyricist knew she’d still feel flutters in her stomach.
