The whole table started chuckling. The mysterious guy looked up from this almost untouched food. His dark eyes fixed on him, a amused smirk on his face "I'm guessing he's the new guy, isn't he?" The guy asked Hazel without taking his eyes off him. His smoky voice was enough confirmation that if he wasn't hot before, he was now. "welcome to the group sunshine. At least this time Hazel told me before that your were coming and I didn't need to break your nose"

Summary
Simon Aebischer has spent the last several years since being released from prison hiding from his past and quietly working toward his PhD. He has his lab, and his weird, fucked-up strand of mutated algae, and a promise he's made to himself to put something good back into the world after everything he's done. He's always assumed that "good" would take the form of meaningful contributions to marine botanical research that might, if he's lucky, do something to help their warming planet.
But then the planet stops warming. It starts to freeze. There's life in the universe besides humanity, and it's going to kill them.
Now there's a woman with red hair telling him he's going to be working on some kind of project. She tells him it's not optional, but he would've gladly gone anyways. He wants to do anything he can to help.
