And then, Lan Wangji whispers something to him.
He pulls back to look at Lan Wangji's face, to see if there's any hint of that being a joke, or a lie hidden underneath, but all he sees is the truth.

Indeed the discipline whip’s legacy is perversely successful in this manner, for Lan Wangji can conceive of no greater punishment for Wei Wuxian than to render him helpless in the face of watching a loved one suffer. And no greater punishment for himself than to witness Wei Wuxian’s suffering over him.
But no one, least of all a discipline whip, should underestimate Wei Wuxian’s willingness to go up against the impossible.
