Time and time again, Himmel lays his heart out for Frieren to have. And each time, she picks it up only to slot it back into his chest, never desiring to hold it in her hands despite the fact that it belongs to her alone. She acts like she believes it’s an accident, but she handles Himmel’s heart with too much care for that to be the truth.
She loves him in some way, though not the way Himmel would like.

It was only when she passed her gate, and locked eyes with Kris down the street – eyes that, unlike recently, were suddenly full of purpose, like a vulture selecting a singular rabbit to prey upon – that Noelle regretted going outside.--

Noelle is a vampire. It's perfectly treatable - a few days under observation, a course of antivirals sent in from the big city, and she'll be her normal vegetarian self again. The only catch? The latter lolls behind their teeth, uselessly, now, pressing against the ridges of their molars, the sharp, monster-like canines near the front. The result of dysphoria, they mull quietly, feeling the clumsy carve along the incisors. It hurts, they press harder.
Noelle stands, they grasp at her wrist. She’s quick to escape that, even, in a way she is to throw herself into anything else. To throw herself into Kris.
