Best friends is too simple a term to squash the entire dynamic of Dazai Osamu and Nakahara Chuuya within.
Sure, they’ve known each other since they were children, and they’re each other’s #1 on their best friend lists on Snapchat, and Chuuya’s been seen one too many times in his hoodies. People have also noticed how Dazai’s main muse for his volunteer hobby of polaroid photographer is the redhead himself.
But the pranks they pull on each other isn’t much of a ‘best friend’ thing to do.

The room fell silent, the weight of Dazai’s confession hanging in the air. Chuuya’s mind was awash with conflicting thoughts and emotions, struggling to reconcile the image of Dazai he had always known with the person sitting before him now.
Chuuya looked at Dazai, his expression conflicted but his voice steady. “I don’t feel the same,” Chuuya’s voice trembled slightly as he uttered the words, “I hate you.”

Chuuya looked down at his hands, avoiding Dazai’s eyes as he spoke. “I was hoping that maybe if we actually went through with dating, that you’d eventually see me for who I really am, not this version you’ve built up over the years. “Unfortunately,” Dazai laments, sighing dramatically. “You just got away with ‘science nerd’ and ‘soccer player,’ but I’m supposed to be an artist! I hate art! It’s useless!”
“Shut the fuck up. That’s not the problem here. You? A ‘zest for life?’ Looking forward to each new morning? Hah! Rimbaud would sooner come back to life.”
Dazai turns to Chuuya with the barest facsimile of a smile painted over his lips.
“I,” he says sweetly, “am going to gut you open like a fish.”
Dazai and Chuuya are seasoned mafiosos at the ripe old age of almost-seventeen. They’ve fought gang wars, interrogated prisoners, and done all manner of unspeakable things. Now, they face their greatest challenge yet: going (undercover) to a real high school. With regular teens (who may or may not be desperately trying to get them to kiss).

LAST READ CHAPTER 19 - only two chapters left and I need to compose myself before reading more.
I loved this so much. I enjoyed the journey Chuuya and Dazai went on in this and how it is beautifully written. Dazai is a mess, but he's getting better, he's strong. So so strong.
Highly recommend.

Summary
Dazai has his back to the door. Chuuya is waiting for him, he’s staying put, he locked the door to keep people out instead of Dazai in, he’s being patient, but one look at his face and the brunette knows immediately that this will only happen once, and his ex-partner will spend tonight crying at the bottom of a bottle if he leaves.
Again.
The thought appears and promptly nails itself into his head. He didn’t want to leave Chuuya four years ago, he hated it, every day he was tempted to go back for Chuuya, only for Chuuya, and damn the consequences. It was only Odasaku’s dying wish, that Dazai now recognises as a plea to save himself from his own destruction, that kept him away. But no one is laying bloody and dying in his lap this time, asking him to go (– go, please, save yourself –).
So, he stays.

....“Why won’t Chuuya tell me, it can’t be that embarrassing.” he whined.
An eye opened.
“Why do you care?” A muffled voice, small, just like the one who said it.
Dazai hesitated at that. Hard to answer. Better to have all the information before thinking about it and making decisions.
“Curiosity?” He shrugged.
Silence. Disappointment at his response? But there wasn’t any hope there to begin with. Resignation? Acceptance? Would he get to know now?

Chuuya does not actually make it a hobby to pick up stray charity cases, now nominally on the side of law and justice or not. There had just been something about the kid, even skin and bones and so undernourished Chuuya could count the blue webbing of blood vessels under his skin, something in his bleach-white hair and the uneven, florescent colour of his eyes that had sent the alarm bells blaring. The reason behind this becomes pretty evident the following morning, when he walks into his living room to see a tiger in place of his couch.
So this is where Kunikida's newest job had been hiding.

The floor shatters under him as For the Tainted Sorrow roars in his veins.
“Shit,” he curses, watching fragments of the floor start to float up around him. “Shit-shit-shit!"
His hands are shaking, but he can’t get gravity to respond. He can’t get his own body to respond.
Then a cool hand lands on his shoulder, and everything clatters back to the ground.*“I won’t leave you.”*
Or, Chuuya breaks, and Dazai spends a year putting his pieces back together, no matter how many times he cuts his fingers on their sharp edges.

The fic is about the road to recovery. Chuuya suffers a lot but the fluff makes it worth it. I feel like it is really realistic and I love Chuuya and Dazai in this. ARGH! They can be so sweet and cute but they can also hurt each other. Chuuya has to also deal with Dazai's sh*t and Dazai tried to redeem himself and not hurt Chuuya.
