Hey- Ratchet here! So, uh... I decided now might be a good time to play a bit of catch-up to whoever may be listening to this recording in the future... I dunno, leave some kinda record made by one of the "heroes" everyone won't stop talking about...

Hiccup is a Norse teenager from the island of Berk, where fighting dragons is a way of life. His progressive views and weird sense of humour make him a misfit, despite the fact that his father is chief of the clan. Tossed into dragon-training, he endeavours to prove himself as a true Viking, but when he befriends an injured dragon -the mythical and illusive Night Fury- he names Toothless, he has the chance to plot a new course for his people's future.
It's now a month later; the village is thriving and a healthy relationship of peace and prosperity is sprouting between the ex-enemies. Hiccup is finally accepted for who and what he is, and respected by all now (even though that's still hard enough to believe every time he wakes up). His father has mostly learnt from his past mistakes, and everything seems right with the land that they live in...
Until it isn't.
Now, stuck in a world full of mind-shattering technology and what should be impossible superpowers, they have to find a way to fit in.

Hiccup couldn't do it. No matter how he looked at it, being chosen to kill the Nightmare as the victor of dragon training had backed him into a corner, and without either sacrificing Toothless or himself, he saw no possible way to change the minds of the Vikings of Berk. The moment he went out there, he'd either be killed by the dragon (since he knew he couldn't bring himself to kill it), or strung up and tortured, then either executed or shipped away as an outcast/possible slave for having gone 'mad' and 'betraying his people' to side with the dragons'.
It wasn't fair that the dragons were so misunderstood, and it was even worse that Vikings were as stubborn as they are...
So he saw no choice but to leave.
"Take me away from here bud. We can't stay any longer, and I already made up my decision. I can't risk losing you. We'll just have to... We'll just have to take on the Queen ourselves. And pray that Astrid doesn't tell my dad first, otherwise there's going to be a lot of bloodshed..."
Toothless only gave a small croon of empathy, before taking off into the night. Unaware of the journey about to take place.

Summary
Since Berkians can remember, every person in the teenage years will gain the ability to shapeshift into their spirit animal. You don’t know what age you’ll gain the ability exactly but it always happens in your teens.
Throughout Berkian history, not one Viking has ever had a dragon as their spiritual form. From what I’m guessing it’s because Vikings loath dragons so much, hating dragons is part of their personality so it makes no sense for a dragon loathing Viking to be a dragon.
I wonder what would happen if a Berkian turned into a dragon?

"Exile still seems the best option, Stoick..."
Stoick should have known better. While he didn't know much about his son-especially now-he knew the boy was clever. It should have been no surprise when a guard burst into the Council Meeting and revealed that Hiccup had escaped the cell Stoick put him in...hours after the boy was revealed to have saddled a dragon.
Hiccup is gone, and so is the beast.
They search, but do not find him. Berk falls asleep one night and awakens in the Great Hall, where the torches come to life and cast an image of their isle on the wall, from which floats Hiccup's voice, years younger.
AKA, Hiccup forfeited the final challenge, leaving Astrid with the right to kill the Nightmare. Story picks up in the Race to the Edge era, except Berk never learned the truth of dragons, no one knows how Hiccup really lost his leg, and stories of a hooded 'vigilante' riding a Night Fury have been long whispered...and Berk will see it all unfold.
