“Kevin Day told me about you.” The corners of Neil’s mouth lift the barest degree. It should be an unassuming, polite smile. Should be.
Andrew isn’t convinced. He hums and leans back in his seat. “You know Kevin.”
“We go way back,” Neil explains. He’s not giving any signs that indicate he’s lying, but still. Kevin usually holds his liquor better than he holds his secrets but Andrew thought he knew everyone Kevin has known since Palmetto State and he’d remember if this guy had been in the Nest.
“He’s never mentioned you,” Andrew says.
“I rarely mention him,” Neil replies easily.

Shopping in heat isn't that big of a deal," says Martin, not for the first time, while Jon, who has recently acquired a vehement dislike of postal workers, bin men, FedEx drivers, dog walkers, bicyclists, and other such unsavory characters, glares vigilantly out the front window. It seems that no amount of gentle prodding can quite convince Jon that this is not Martin’s first go on the estruation rodeo, and that he has, in fact, survived roughly fifteen years worth of heats without Jon’s intervention.
To be honest, Martin isn't trying particularly hard to prove his point. Maybe Martin doesn't really mind being guarded. Maybe Martin deserves a bit of white-knighting, after all he's been through.

Summary
The one where Andrew makes a perfectly reasonable request and Neil takes it too far like the dumbass he is.
Or, relationships are complicated and communication is hard. They don't always nail it.
So, Andrew has hit his limit. Neil’s charged silence next to him is so loud that Andrew can’t read over the buzz of it in his ears.
“Get out,” he says, turning to glare at Neil.
Neil blinks at him.
“Whatever stupid thing you’re obsessing over. It’s irritating. I don’t have time to solve your problems for you. Handle it. I have to study.”
Instantly, he realizes it was a mistake. He watches Neil’s face and body shutter up, closing tight like he’s locking down for a hurricane. It took so fucking long to get Neil to open up in the first place. Andrew had to peel him open one truth at a time. Fuck.

“What about Minyard? Would you sign with Atlanta?”
Neil says, “Andrew? He’s a nightmare.”
He knows it’s a joke. His team knows it’s a joke. Andrew will know it’s a joke.
The press does not seem to know that it’s a joke.

“Neil knows what I want,” Andrew snaps. This is not Andrew’s fault.
“How do you know?”
Because Neil always knows. He is as fluent in Andrew’s micro-expressions as he is in German and French. He knows which head tilts mean “go on” and which ones mean “shut up.” Without ever asking, he learned what it meant to see Andrew wearing double layers of long sleeves, or taking multiple showers in a day, and learned to hand Andrew the car keys.
That has always been the most terrifying thing about Neil — his patience to wait, watch, listen, learn. The prospect that if Neil were given enough time, there would be no part of Andrew that was just Andrew’s anymore.
“He has to know,” Andrew says.
“Does he?” Renee says. “Have you ever known Neil to assume that he is wanted?”
Five times Neil tells someone that he and Andrew aren’t dating, and one time Andrew uses his words to set the record straight.

But on the other hand, being with each other is the most natural thing they've ever done. Like a chemical reaction, or two halves of something whole, or one of those hand puzzles where the two pieces of metal are all twisted around each other, or the logical and satisfying conclusion of a really good book.
