“Huh?!”
“This cake. I can’t tase it,” Tomioka stated, not an ounce of emotion shining through cobalt eyes. “Did I mess up the recipe?!” Mitsuri frantically flailed her arms. “No one ever dislikes my baking,” she pouted. He could feel Obanai glaring daggers at the back of his head.

Her baking had enraptured her house guests. Each new pasty was received by selfish hands and engulfed by ravenous mouths. She threw sweet after sweet towards the hungry pack of wolves until their voracious hunger slowed down to a stream of small bites then simmered down into occasional nibbles. Her friends now laid in slouched positions, calm and satiated.
All except Tomioka.

In the cold hours of dawn lay a tiny, blued boy wearing a small smile framed by frozen tear tracks.
If a passerby had witnessed the sad sight, they might have noticed the burnt remains of long matches circling the boy. They might have gazed with pity as they assumed he had tried to warm himself.
They could never have imagined the wondrous things he had seen that night.

AKA Pre-League of Assassins Jason Todd finds himself secluded in a cold back-alley with no recollection of who he is. He picks up a small matchbox, and with every flick of his wrist, an old memory arises. Inspired by the Little Match Girl, this is my interpretation of a homeless Jason Todd after he flees the hospital.

Summary
At school, they were taught that Guides were gentle. Nurturing. Made to soothe their Sentinels, to ground them, to serve.
They weren’t fighters.
They weren’t strong.
They posed no threat.
The League taught Jason the truth.
Few things in the world were more dangerous—or more terrifying—than a Guide.
Because a true Empath didn’t need to lift a weapon to destroy you. They only had to feel you—deep enough, long enough—and they could take you apart from the inside out.
Or: Having grown up on the streets, Jason thought he already understood the depths of human suffering. But awakening as a Guide shattered that illusion—because knowing pain was one thing. Feeling it, in all its raw, unfiltered truth from everyone around him, was something else entirely.
