Summary
Greta loves Carson’s confidence, and that’s why Carson decided to wear a three piece suit tonight. She wore her hair down because Greta likes to grab it when she’s close and she rolled her sleeves up because… well, because that might always be useful.

Summary
Greta had an eye for detail - the right shade of red lipstick, the careful swoop of her hair over one brow, the perfect brooch to accessorize the jacket of her traveling suit. The way Carson Shaw’s eyes had snagged on her lips the first time they met, the way she blushed when Greta winked at her, the way she stopped breathing when Greta stepped too close.
Or, Greta waits around for Carson after a game.

Summary
Greta finds there is something satisfying about mailing her new address to each one to her far-flung friends; Jo in California, Lupe in Texas, Esti back in Cuba. It feels like a statement, as though she is saying: look, I made it, I established myself.
Maybe I’m not too much after all.
---
Somehow, Greta's New York apartment becomes a crash-landing pad for every wayward Peach. (All except one, that is.)

Summary
"The letters paint a picture of Carson’s life since Rockford, and Greta hungers for every new instalment. She learns of what happened immediately after they parted on the porch, of the way Carson had returned to Idaho just long enough to draw a line under her life in Lake Valley. She follows Carson’s slow journey back to Illinois, this time to Chicago to earn a little money and try to set a new direction for herself. But, as a compass points always to the north, in time Carson had written to ask - ever so shyly and gently - if Greta might still want her to come to New York."
After months spent sending love letters back and forth across the country, Carson pays a visit to New York, just in time for Christmas.

Summary
That was the summer of 1963. That was before President Kennedy was shot, before the Beatles came, when I still thought I could join the Chicago Cubs someday, and I honestly believed I’d be swept off my feet if only I could find a guy as great as my dad.
Or, Carson Shaw is eighteen, and she can’t imagine either falling in love or disappointing her father—until she meets Greta Gill.

Summary
They don’t say more than a word before Carson is kissing her again, hands warm at her hips and pressing her against the wall until she can’t help but moan softly, fingers tangling up in Carson’s hair and pulling her closer, closer, letting herself sink into this for a moment even as she thinks about the next, safest move.
Carson kisses her like nobody’s ever kissed her properly before, like she’s never known it could feel this way, and even as she leaves, Greta thinks, vaguely, that she wants nothing more than to be the one that shows Carson just how good everything can be.
It’s a terrifying feeling, really. One that she hasn’t felt in years: hope.
(Or, five times Carson gives Greta hope.)

Summary
“I believe in tables to sit at,” Greta tells her, reaching across the distance for Carson’s hand, turning it face up, tracing the lines of her palm. “Someone to sit with.”
“Oh..." Carson breathes, curling her fingers in softly. Greta trembles a little, scared of what she’ll say, and Carson feels it. She squeezes her grip, smiling. “Me too,” she says, swallowing. “I believe in that too. Someone to- to be with.”
“Yeah?” Greta asks shyly. Carson reaches to tuck her hair behind her ear, cupping her jaw so that Greta will look at her.
“Yeah,” she replies.
And at this kitchen table, something shifts between them. The light hits Greta’s blush differently as they look at each other, and Carson hasn’t stopped smiling since they started talking. This beating heart of the Rockford house - where the Peaches gather and laugh and drink and eat - holds them in all of its softness, watches them quietly in their falling and knows that they will catch each other. There is nothing more wonderful than being held this way, than feeling at home.
(Or, the story of Greta and Carson growing up and growing older together, how they change and become, as told by the kitchens they occupy throughout their lives.)

Summary
“A cosmo for the lady,” Carson says, returning to their standing table and sliding the drink across the smooth surface.
“Thank you, baby,” Greta replies with a smile, swirling the drink in the glass before she takes a sip, humming.
The corner of her mouth turns up further when she feels Carson watching her, eyes moving over the bob of her throat, falling between her breasts after a moment of hesitation. Even after a year and some of being together, Carson still looks at Greta like she’s never seen her before. Of course, Carson tells her over and over again that she’s the most beautiful woman she’s ever seen, but there’s something about that look, the soft darkness in her eyes, how she wants her so openly.
It’s their regular Friday date night, and this is their favorite queer club. Jo is the bartender, Lupe is the DJ, and Jess is the bouncer. There’s nowhere better in the city than Sarge’s.
(Or, date night is the best part of their week — and it gets even better as the night rolls on ;) )

Summary
Greta forces herself to stand her ground, thinking idly that her unexpected lingering guest kind of reminds her of Maybelle: full of responsibility and seemingly looking for a moment away from it, unafraid, searching for a place to belong. It’s enough to give her the tiniest rush of affection. But Maybelle makes her think of Jo, and Jo makes her think of Ana, and Ana makes her think of Terri, and Terri makes her think of the church, and the convent, and Carson–
God.
Everything comes back to Carson.
At this point, Greta knows she shouldn’t think of her, but it’s hard.
(Or, Greta is now in New York for the off-season, and she's doing the whole seeing other people thing Carson joked about that night in the kitchen. It's not going well. But luckily, Carson decides to make her way to New York, to see Greta, to finally, finally make things right. It just might take a second to get there.)

Summary
For so long, Carson believed that love came from wanting everything somebody else had that you didn’t. That love came from the fact that somebody might fill in those parts of you.
She convinces herself she loves Charlie because of it.
Charlie isn’t a girl. He is strong and handsome, that’s why he gets to play baseball with the boys. He’s not a girl, and he gets to do all of the things that Carson doesn’t. All of the things Carson wishes she could. He is all of the things Carson knows she is but doesn’t get to call herself.
--
Greta is a woman. Carson knows this for sure, and she can’t feel this much for a woman. She can’t. But then, Greta smiles at her, takes her hand, pulls and says, here’s your destiny, and Carson thinks that maybe she is the kind of person who has a destiny after all. Destiny looks like red hair and dark eyes.
Salvation.

Summary
Life in New York is good. It’s better than good, honestly. At the turn of the off-season, it was barely a few weeks before Carson showed up at Greta’s door, both her suitcases in hand and a look of desperate affection in her eyes, before Greta pulled her inside and held her close. She hasn’t let her go since, and Carson has been happy to stay – more than happy, really.
Since then, they’ve been falling asleep beside each other every night, and Greta has spent time trying to get used to seeing Carson Shaw in her bed, the lamp painting her gold as she reads, waiting for Greta to finish showering so they can turn off the light.
Carson’s eyes always flicker to her the moment she steps into their bedroom, gaze following the water that slips along Greta’s skin, fixing on the flush in Greta’s cheeks from the steamed-up bathroom.
(Or, Gretson as seen through the lens of the five senses, how Carson looks, smells, feels, tastes, and sounds like home.)

Summary
It’s not that Greta doesn’t like how much Carson talks. There’s something comforting about it, about the low timbre of her voice that wraps Greta up like a blanket when the days are hard, but sometimes, she just wants quiet with Carson, solemn silence where they can exist together away from the world.
Luckily, there’s an extremely effective method to make that happen.
Greta finds that all she really has to do is take off her clothes.
(Or, five times Greta gets Carson out of her head the only way she knows how. Carson really does sometimes talk and think too much for her own good, and Greta can think of so many other things that they could do instead.)

Summary
"She isn’t used to Carson’s particular brand of eager attention, to the way it seems like she actually wants Greta and not just any old bite of some forbidden fruit."
On that first night in the convent, Greta realises that Carson needs to ease up a little. She's got a pretty good idea of how to make that happen. [Or, shameless smut with a lot of Greta feelings/introspection].
