Once he’s done he likes to just sit there. On his knees in front of his mirror studying himself. His cheeks have puffed up along with his lips, he sees the faint glisten of a tear or two. His hair is disheveled and there’s a coating of spit with chunks around his mouth. It’s gross.
“It’s worth it though,” Peter mutters under his breath.
It’s almost lost in how hoarse his voice is.

“Kai,” Jay says, voice thin, unfamiliar.
Kai just hums again, keeps cutting, keeps working, keeps smiling, like nothing’s wrong, like everything’s fine, like Jay isn’t watching himself in the mirror and realizing, slowly, terribly, that the thing staring back at him is still just a little too slow, a little too still, a little too something else. And the worst part, the absolute worst part, is that it’s smiling. Just slightly.
And the words he says next, he’ll blame on exhaustion, on tiredness, on isolation and the hunger that beats at him and crawls up his windpipe. “Am I too far gone?”

Kai can’t help but feel like he isn’t doing enough.
All the money his team is working so hard for is going towards keeping a roof over their heads, and the children’s parties he’s booking just don’t pay enough.
So, to try and alleviate some of the stress from everybody else, Kai has made it his responsibility to ensure there’s enough money left over for them to eat.
(There isn’t enough money. But, really, what’s the harm in a few missed meals?)

Summary
Kai suddenly grabs his bag and phone, leaving his drink on the table, as he quickly leaves out the back door, pulling up Jay’s contact and calling him back. He walks outside, moving past a handful of dumpsters and arrives at a more isolated spot, usually where he’d go to smoke.
He waits rather impatiently, internally cursing himself each second that Jay doesn’t pick up. This is stupid, he thinks, but waits nonetheless.
Jay answers.

After Zane's death, Kai accidentally saves Jay's life.

Kai notices a few things about Cole whenever he is in the room:
1. He saved the bunk that was most likely not going to get touched by water if it ever rains. He also keeps his blankets warm and dry, often putting them in the sun.
2. He doesn't eat much. If he does, it's usually over some cake or something he cooked— and he has a preference for dried food. Speaking of which, he has an aversion to soup or liquid-based meals.
3. This man, for some God-forsaken reason, has not drank any water, not whenever Kai is present.
4. Sometimes this man disappears and reappears at the most surprising and scariest times possible as if he showed up out of nowhere.
5. He doesn't like touching. Or, more like, he isn’t fond of physical contact if he wasn’t prepared for it.
6. And last, he's green at times, when the light hits him at the right angle.-
Or Kai makes friends, and then slowly falls in love with his roommate, Cole Brookstone, who is not as human as he seems.

The first time he had ever met the Fire Lord in person- all those tales, leading up to this man. Then again, Lloyd had envisioned a meeting where he burst into the Palace with his friends, easily defeated the ruler of the Realm and saved Kai, preferably making it home in time for tea.
Alas, things don’t always work out the way you’d like them to. Lloyd should have expected this. He was a ninja, after all. Either way, the dragon's kidnapping had culminated in a very uncomfortable dragging into the throne room, faced with this Lord.

The man shifted in his seat, no longer lounging. His red eyes behind the mask sparkled in curiosity.
