The monitor on his ankle was a leaded weight that was getting harder to ignore by the minute. Cole had run away from two foster homes and a group home at this point, as well as having a history of self harming and an attempt, so it was understandable that he would be sent to a high risk group home. Though, the people he talked to hadn’t called it a group home. They called it a ‘monastery.’

“Y’know, none of us actually saw Kai’s body… what if he’s still alive?”
“Cole…”
He stood, pacing the room. “No, really! What if he survived the collapse? He had all the elemental powers under his control, so it totally would’ve been possible! We— we have to go back!”
“Cole!” Garmadon snapped.
The sound shook him from his revelation.
“What you say is true, but… I don’t want you to get your hopes up. In all likelihood, he did not survive. You yourself saw him get buried.”
“I…” Cole slumped. “I did…”
“He’s… he’s right,” Skylor groaned.
Garmadon rushed next to her bed. “Skylor! You’re awake! How do you feel?”
Carefully, she sat up. “I’m… basically fine. My head hurts, but it’s nothing I can’t handle.” She looked to Cole. “Never mind that. Cole is right. We have to go back and look for Kai.”
“Thank you!”
“Not just for the reason you said.”
“Oh.”

At the end of the tournament of elements, Kai was unable to shake off the corrupting power of Chen’s staff. If he survived the aftermath of his own outburst, what happened to him and the staff? Could Cole and Nya bring him back?

His father spent his days with his eyes glued to the carpet, never quite daring to look at his son’s face.Or, Cole's only way to see a bit of his mother again is to look at his own reflection (and ghosts don't get to appear in mirrors).

Summary
Kai is grieving over the loss of Zane between seasons 3 and 4. Much of his stubbornness and recklessness are due to his desire to help his loved ones, either directly or by becoming strong enough to defeat anyone who might threaten them with their plans. In turn, his friends and family work to balance out Kai's more extreme traits. But what happens when he is left alone with all the pain and guilt burning inside him?
“What - Oh, I see. Your eyes are waaay more dilated than they should be with this light in your face,” the cop’s demeanor changes into a more hostile stance, “Listen, buddy, you can’t stick needles in your arm and take naps in public parks. If you don’t start moving right now, I’m going to have to bring you in until you sober up.”
Alarm bells are ringing in Kai’s head but he’s still not in a critical thinking stage. What gets through is that light man is bad. He needs to leave, now. He needs to escape. Get away, now.

He could almost see Lloyd’s face as Kai turned.
“KAI! NO! PLEASE!” The kid started properly sobbing, turning his head around to find a route out, to be blocked by the collapsing volcano.
“PLEASE! I’M SORRY!”
OR
Kai chooses the fangblade over Lloyd at the volcano, and the events that follow. Will mainly consist between seasons 1-2 but may have spin offs with later seasons.

‘Cole felt like he was dreaming, walking through a thick haze, senses dulled to a deafening numbness. He couldn't feel anything. He saw leaves rustling, but he couldn't feel the breeze. He could barely feel the ground under his feet.’
I was blown away by the love I received for my recent angsty ball of Ninjago fanfiction; Just Breathe. So I wrote another one, this time focused on Cole’s time as a ghost. While Cole takes centre stage, there is plenty of Lloyd/Morro angst and Jay/Nya/Nadakhan angst mixed in.
The fic spans from the start of S5 until post S7. It is canon compliant, but focusing on the times in between. S6 in particular is treated from the team’s perspective, so skipped over completely (although the events are eventually discussed).
TW: There is violence, but it is only slightly worse than what you would expect in canon. There is discussions of rape. The rape itself isn’t graphically described, but it comes up multiple times. I will put an author’s note at the start of each chapter that is relevant.- Language:
