“It’ll only be till sunrise,” Drifter states, as if that would convince Mirage any more.
“You can’t come in here.” Mirage stands his ground.
Drifter keeps grinning but Mirage can tell his smile is faltering ever so slightly. He’s still holding his side with his blood stained hands. “And why is that?”
“Look at you. You’re shameful, covered head to toe in blood.” Mirage says it with so much malice that he almost feels guilty. Drifter looks down at the blood coating his body, staining his arms and clothes. He sighs.
“What if I told ya it wasn’t someone else’s blood?”

“Oh!” Neve set down her cup. “That reminds me.” She pulled a letter from her pocket and passed it across the table. “This showed up today. I don’t recognize the name, but it has your surname on it, Rook.”
He reached for it.
Rook should have realized what it was before he laid eyes on it, but the good mood of the evening had disarmed him. A strange feeling swept through him. His fingers froze in a pinch around the letter. He didn’t want to open it.

During a week of enforced downtime following his collapse, a letter from Rook's past surfaces some personal issues he hasn't thought about in a long time. Lucanis and Spite offer some perspective.
