“A mermaid…?” Izuku whispered, still staring. Once found in nearly every body of water, mermaids had grown increasingly rare since the industrial revolution. If a mermaid really had moved to this patch of coastline, then it was no wonder people were celebrating.
Izuku had always wanted to meet a mermaid. He wondered if he'd get to meet this one.

Not that the revitalization of a town’s ancient cultural practices wasn’t important, it just wasn’t the usual hard-hitting, front page news he was used to writing.
If Izuku had known that he would be meeting the most gorgeous man alive on this trip, however... He would have groveled at his boss’ feet in thanks for the chance to meet Bakugou Katsuki.

Dynamight sneered up at Izuku, his thick arms working quickly to secure the villain into place. Izuku’s breath hitched when his own cool green eyes met the smoldering red fury of Dynamight’s.
“Deku,” Dynamight returned, his voice rasping and edged—like a rattlesnake, but oh, so much sweeter. It made Izuku want to step closer and test his patience, just to hear the warning in his growl a little more.
It made him want to do things. To Dynamight, but also for him.

Katsuki squeezed his legs together and braced his hand against his eyes. He could feel the ghost of Izuku’s hands all over his body, but the sensation was rapidly fading as reality set in. He’d been so close! Izuku had been, too, Katsuki was certain, and he cursed the missed opportunity.
God, what he wouldn’t give to be able to have his boyfriend under him again. Even just for a few more minutes.

Meanwhile, Midoriya Izuku hit rock bottom months ago. He's pulling himself back to his feet, working shitty jobs with shitty pay and just doing his best to eat most days. At least he's not in debt anymore, though. At least he has a roof over his head.
On Katsuki's way down and on Izuku's way up, they catch each other.

Or, after five years apart, Katsuki and Izuku meet again under equally humbling circumstances. Things improve from there.
