The man handed it over eagerly and Shane took a deep breath, praying that this actually worked. The phone rang and rang before going to voicemail, but Shane relaxed when the familiar old voice confirmed it still belonged to the man he’d known as a kid. And Shane, eternal hater of asking for help, did his best to complete one of the most awkward tasks of his life.
“Hi Mr. Chabaud, this is Shane, David and Yuna’s boy. Um, this is going to sound strange, and trust me it’s a long story, but when you get this could you go across the street to my parents house and tell them the news is wrong and I’m not actually dead?”

Ilya could do nothing but watch as one of his own teammates slammed Shane into the sideboards. Shane had been caught offguard, too focused on making the pass to see the big man barreling toward him. Ilya saw it, though. Time slowed as he watched how hard the impact was, Shane’s body crumpling to the ground. Shane was on his side, curled in a ball, motionless.
Not again. Not this again.
Or: A year after Shane's last accident on the ice, he has another. Ilya freaks out. He can't do this again. Luckily, this time he isn't facing things alone.

He clocked the angle before the hit even landed; Marlow coming in too hot, too fast, shoulder high. Shane turned and slowed at the wrong moment, skates clipping, balance gone.
Impact.
The sound carried oddly through the arena, duller than boards, sharper than ice. Shane went down hard, helmet skidding, body twisting. And then it all happened at once. Skates tangled. Marlow stumbled over him as he fell, too. A skate’s blade flashed too close, too sharp.

Shane's injuries during the Boston/Montreal game are much more life-threatening than in canon. Ilya's quick thinking and bone-deep instincts are the only reason he survives.

Looking back now, he can see 3 guys in ski masks now circling him, one of them bent over double.
“The fuck?” He says, his voice a higher register than normal. He spins around, taking in the sight of 3 men circling around him like sharks encircling their prey. His mind spares a stray thought encouraging him to fight them off, which is immediately abandoned in favor of trying to dodge between two of them and get away. He lunges as quickly as he can, but he's not nearly fast enough to break away before a hand fists around the back of his jacket, jerking him backwards and into a car. "
