“Yeah,” Patrick nods. He’s pretty sure David knows the annual birthday surprise party stopped being a surprise after year two or three. David doesn’t even inflict fictional catastrophes on the café as a decoy anymore. But Patrick plays along anyway. In some ways their whole partnership is built on playing along.

“Okay David. What is it that you think that this is?” Patrick mimicked David’s hand gesture.
David pressed his lips between his teeth. “We’re … friends. Who … sometimes fuck?” He looked away from Patrick, not wanting to see his reaction. He wasn’t sure why this felt difficult. It was just sex.
“Sure,” Patrick breathed out. “That works. Casual sex is fine by me.” There was something that flickered in his eyes when he said it, but David couldn’t place it.
“Enough talking then.”
